Crazy how I neglect this blog when I really like to write but somehow I feel no one wants to read jabber and then although I am "ART-ING", I don't take any pictures and so who wants to hear about something that has no image to go with it. Here are a few things finished lately. I took some pictures because I entered a competition. The competition is mostly a pipe dream because I don't enter any shows or promote myself in any way. So if the people previewing art quilters are looking for a big name then they won't know me. I do what I want, when I want and mostly give my art away because it makes us happy.

I did this art quilt because my parents always laughed at this picture of me in the second grade because I am not smiling. It was because the photographer told me to say peaches and I thought that was stupid. I did say peaches but it was with a smirk. Note the left pigtail is cut off for dramatization.

Don't Say Peaches

.
My cousin Nan saw this picture in a magazine and wanted me to do an art quilt of the silliest donkeys I have ever seen. Only 4 classes were offered the first week. Economy or perhaps many more are choosing Quilting by the Lake this year. Lots of things have changed, Now the program is held at the Columbia College of Art and Design. The studio space is very nice but lodging in the dorms leaves much to be desired. Won't do this again. There are no ammenities other than a hot shower and horrible mattress. Blankets were few and they had hair trapped in the fibers. Totally gross!

After spending a week at QSDS, and $1500.00 wasted, I am about to forget my disappointment and move on. I was so pumped because I was taking a class on Digital Design for Textiles from Michael James. I thought this was going to be a real cool class. Wrong! James spent the majority of time teaching basic Photoshop, Illustrator and on the 4th day, Power Point. Confusion and lack of organization only added to the negative experience. The handouts were written for Mac and all were using PCs is only one example of the lack of control. I did learn more about James than I ever needed to know. He seemed nice enough but someone owes me the waste of time and money. My reviews of James and his class could not be more negative.

On to better things, I am working up a fury trying to get all the things off my to do list:
1. Quilt 3 quilts
2. Finish piece I started in my dorm room after I dropped out of Digital Design Class.
3. Get clothes together for charity
4. So much fun thread sketching a Dragon Fly. Actually I missed the point about sketching because I thread painted the thing. Neon Green. Actually he is fairly comical to look at. Susan was an excellent teacher and spent lots of one on one with the attendees. Afterwards she gave a trunk show which was very nice. I think all enjoyed the workshop and the trunk show.

I was especially interested in her painted pieces, I guess because I am a painter. The tricky part is to paint and retain the natural hand of the fabric. Lots of paints out there and techniques employed by different fiber artists. Not sure there is a solid solution. Guess I am going to have to do alot of experimentation becaue painting is what I do and enjoy. Unfortunately I am not a traditional quilter and I do not enjoy piecing hundreds of pieces together to make a quilt. I love transforming the fabric at hand into art.

I prefer using thin fusible fleece as a stabilizer when thread sketching/painting because I have less warp. Others may prefer a heavy stabilizer but I can't control the fabic warping as well with the just stabilizer.
Here is a nearly finished thread painted piece using batik, thread, and colored pencils. I sitll have to quilt and add the stars to the eyes. "They made me say peaches!

Another example of Thread Painting is a closeup of a frog piece I am working on, actually they are mutant frogs. The detail shows the difference thread painting makes. Thread Painted and planned two small auction quilts one for SAQA and the other for QSDS. Nothing concrete, final design may come to me in the night, sometimes it does.
When I was in graduate school; most design problems were worked out while sleeping or cleaning. Sketching ideas has never been a practise for me because I prefer to visually work details in my mind long before I put pencil to paper. Maybe I can blame it on a whacked vivid imagination, or parallel thinking. A psychologist friend of mine told me that I stand on the line between the right and left brain. Not sure whether that is good or bad but I do know my brain is weird. My thoughts can be bizzare and my work habits are usually insane. I get a lot done when and only under intense pressure, otherwise I find ways to diddle and get nothing done.

I mentioned cleaning before and the place is has in my life. I am no neat freak, far from it, but I can not be creative in my mess either. Cleaning is a task I do before I am able to ease my brain into a creative mode. I really don't do well with distractions or sounds, including music. Anyone else around and I get slap happy. I really like to cook, but only if there is someone to cook for. If I lived alone, my diet would be tomato soup, cereal, fruit, and salad makings. I doubt I would even need a stove. Sometimes I would order Shrimp LoMein, but that would be it. No sweets in my cabinets because I would consume one bite after the other until gone. What a terrible diet, glad I don't live alone.

Currently, my to-do list is manageable, two quilts need to be quilted for my lovely daughter-in-law, two art quilts need threads, two small quilts need to be created, and several unfinished quilts are waiting for me. I have a lot of quilt tops that need just one more border and then they would be ready for quilting. I don't do well once the creative mode is broken whether a quilt or painting. I really need to start and finish a project or I whine and grummble if I have to go back and finish some time later. That may explain why there are so many UFOs stacking up in neat plastic boxes.

Lent Observance - 40 days of promise.

Vye and I have promised to give up white bread and sweets for Lent…that is 40 days of nothing holding my sandwich together or filling my sweet tooth for 40 days. Broken arm with 2 surgeries, back procedure and then a rotator cuff repair has kept me in the rough. Getting better now since I am 8 weeks out from rotator repair. Start strengthening in therapy next week so will be gripping plenty when I start that.

Final drawings on our house have been done. Lots going on to get ready for the new house. Drew up the layout and then it was translated into workable plans for construction.

Nothing new on the creative scene, working with others to send 128 quilts to Afghanistan for an Army unit that is located in the pit of pits. Can’t do much more than raid my stash and give moral support at this time but soon will be able to get back on the quilting machine and quilt some of the tops that have come in from all over the country.

Vickie's Tempest at it's worse!

This silk painting done over 20 years ago with Vickie has been waiting for more. She recently brought it back wanting more. No idea on how to progress because this piece in no way is typical for me. I love primary color and this piece was done using pastels. Created in our younger days, with the help of wine and lots of laughter, Vickie instructed me to draw and which colors fit her color scheme at the moment. Not sure why I would ever paint anything to match something else is beyond me. Why I would use pastels is way beyond me. I am all about strong rich color, primaries that force one to feel energy, never pansy pastels.

I dread having to return to an unfinished piece. It is the creative process that moves me, not the finished art piece. I find it dreadful to go backwards; going backwards forces me to be analytical and seems to shut down my right brain, calling on my left-brain to be creative which is not possible. When not in my creative mindset, finding myself working out of my left-brain, it all becomes work, total dreadful work.

Vickie's Tempest

Vickie's Tempest Edited
As luck would have it, SAQA’s Sandra Sider and Lisa Chipetine were offering a critique so the image was sent for insight and ideas. It needed new eyes, although I hadn’t seen the piece in over 20 years, it was in no way fresh or offering any opportunities to me. Enough whining about “Vickie’s Tempest”, now that I have ideas passed on to me by the critique. Suggestions were to treat the piece as an underwater scene, layering organza and wavy quilting patterns. Wonderful ideas and now I am generated and the piece may be completed before another 20 years passes. Now off to create an underwater tempest, that should keep me entertained for a few days.

Naked Ladies

Late last summer, the lilies, commonly known as “Naked Ladies”, entranced me so much, that I was seeing them everywhere. A beautiful lily perched on a long green stem and not a leaf in sight. Sometimes a single plant, sometimes a bounty of lovely singing out loud and clear, “Look at me”. Surely, in all the late summers that have past me by, I must have seen these plants, which now seemed to be everywhere. By the time I realized that I must document in some form or fashion these extraordinary plants so that in the event I wanted to use them in my art, I would have more than my fading memory to draw from. Oops, not so! I had noticed a huge collection of these beauties in my cousin’s side garden; perhaps she could snap a few pictures. Not so, too late because the lovelies were old, tired and about to drop, somewhat like me on any given day. Not to be deterred, I had the Internet, so off to cyberspace for naked ladies. Lots of naked ladies images, fresh and perky ready to be freely downloaded with only a few clicks.

Not to be sidetracking here but I have an addiction to batiks (fabric). May have something to do with my painter’s eye, may have something to do with the fact that batik fabric is typically more expensive which is my usually my choice to go for the most expensive, since I have beer pockets and champagne taste. So are you wondering where this is going? I had purchased a few packages of batik strips, which I sewed together and then cut apart into triangles and then put together in a geometric patterned quilt top. I did this to avoid doing something else that I should have been doing, kind-a free-basing if you please. Some would call it procrastination but I prefer to call it free-basing, which is an entitlement if you are born an artist. My definition of free-basing is allowing the right brain to run freely here and there from one base to the other, hitting home runs.

Back to the naked ladies and my fascination. I decided that I had to play with my naked ladies and so I cut out some, painted with paint and magic markers and then I thread painted. Now I have all colors and shapes and so I decided they needed to be on a quilt, I could claim naked ladies were laying all over my bed. Actually I loved the colors too and wanted something colorful in my world when all I could see outside was the white carpet that covered VA for so long. This story continues to drag on and on doesn’t it? I could have shown you the quilt and that would have been that but you need to know one other fact about this quilt. The quilting is intertwined leaves and swirls that hide the twelve naked ladies quilted into the quilt. They are stitched in; nothing crude was drawn only shapes suggesting the beautiful form of the female body. Then there are the appliquéd naked ladies too. Shown here is a show image of the quilt.

There are some wonderful people in our world!

Today I received a phone call from a woman I had contacted regarding a donation to our Patriot Quilters group, last November. I thought maybe she had forgottern us but the phone rang and there she was ready to give. Our group makes quilts to be donated to wounded service people. Gloria in NC is sending our group fabric for the quilts. The best part of her gift is that she is doing it with a true heart, praying for our stitches and work. God creates the most beautiful people!

We have tops ready to quilt and we launch our cause in March at our guild's (Patches and Piecework) quilt show. While our primary goal and rathers would be to design, piece, and quilt, someone has to raise some money to support our casue. So from this moment on we need money for batting. We do have a bank account *Patriot Quilters* with a balance of $25.00, and that will grow.

2010 & Still Breathing!

December came and went and nothing wonderful happening around here. Before Christmas we got 18” of snow, which made for some slipping and sliding and anxious moments for many. I didn’t go out because of the cold. The weather and cold has wreaked havoc on my asthma this winter, which is partially the reason there has been no blogging or anything for that matter.

I had a Christmas dinner for my family about 30 people and we did it in Charlie’s shop. Set up tables and fed everyone out there. Went well. No spectacular presents given or received, actually a rather boring Christmas. With help from the Piccadilly elves we did manage to produce 8 quilts and 7 checkerboards for presents. Too busy to photograph anything so out the door they went. Actually all were very nice and should have been photographed but here again I forgot.

We went to GA for a visit with my son and his family. Always enjoy spending time with them. My two granddaughters, Josie Gayle and Carly Grace are my heart. It was a cold in GA as it was here, in the 20’s. Mitzi, the girls and I went to a fabulous quilt shop somewhere in or near Emory GA while we were there. The shop had only modern fabrics, which is right up my alley. Bought a backing for a quilt I am working on now. Josie got her first quilting book…so cute at 6; you just want to hold them tight.

Lots in the works, but first thing first. I need a new sewing apron the one I have been using for the last year hangs weird and has a hole in it. Seam ripper fell through and dived into the floor. It could have been my foot. So first things first a new apron with designated pockets for tools. Quilted for strength, sharp points and body. Designed for the needle maniac. I will post instructions for it here when finished.

I can’t even begin to work without an apron on, puts me in the work mode I suppose. Vye has one here as well. I have different aprons for different tasks. I have an old apron that is covered in paint smears that I wear when painting, somehow it keeps me focused or leashed to my work. I never know when one of the smears is fresh and can ruin furniture or other garments so if that apron is on I steer clear of anything I could ruin with paint. Heck, you can’t even eat with it on so no snacking because it is nasty looking. If the apron is on then you are reminded when you sit down or sprawl out in the recliner that you are supposed to be upright working. The stuff in you pockets bunches in your lap and constantly reminds you to get up if you want it out of your lap.

Take the kitchen apron, designed to keep food stains off clothes, right? Not so, I believe it is a professional badge, a stop sign, glittering armor, that identifies the one who is really in control of her/his domain. Others entering the area are immediately at a disadvantage. They take direction from the one wearing the apron. Usually they fire lots of questions, and one may be the one that most cooks don’t need to hear. What can I do to help? That is a stupid question that doesn’t even have to be vocalized in my world. If you step over the line into my world I am going to give you a job. My world is built on the premise that all men and women are created alike to share in the joys and tasks of our wonderful existence.

So my question to the world at large is what happened to the lowly apron, why did it go out of fashion and use? There may be a doctoral paper here for a socialogist. Why did the apron disappear from kitchens? Why do most artists and craftspersons soil their clothes and then wear them over and over again becasue they are all ready soiled. "That is my painting shirt!" My question is when was the last time it was washed? Fortnately aprons are so designed that they rarely are exposed to body odors. Washing is optional except for aprons used in food preparation.

Time for Merry Doings

December is here and the new year will be here before I know it. Been busy doing lots of gifts for the holidays. Not exactly the kind of quilts that I would be doing but if I did the kind I want to do then no one would be able to cuddle up and know how much I love them. Actually they most likely would be quite surprised to open a package and have it reveal a wall hanging with some abstract convoluted insane message that probably only means something to me.

Remember the challenge that Vye and I have been doing. We did not place this time either, I know it is rigged and I know never will I read or have anything to do with that website...allpeoplequilt.com. Great turnout of cars and people....really unbelievable. There had to have been a "mil or two" parked at our place.

The day was beautiful and then we had a snag, My friend Vye was here starting to quilt her quilt for our last quarterly challenge and I was fine. I had come in to assist her and then I was going back to the festivities outside. Three of my cousins were in here with us and we are enjoying the day. Thank goodness the children had gone out because I got choky and coughing and could not come out of it even with all the asthma drugs I took. Waited 45 minutes and no better so went to ER and was ash gray and moving very little air...The entry person in the ER wanted papers filled out and my friend told him I would stop breathing before I could finish...Things started happening then when he finally looked out his little window hole at me; they took me sraight back, called resperatory therapy stat, shot me a full of steroids and gave me several resperatory treatments. Oxygen set on 8 liters and threatening intubation. I must have looked pretty bad because the resperatory therapist (who looked like a 12 year old) asked Vye if I was her mother. Laying there gasping for air, gray, hair a mess, no makeup, no jewlery and a ugly gown, nto to mention tubes and wires a plenty. It was a good thing I could not talk but I was told my eyes said what my brain wanted to say, The ER doctor politely told I was going to be admitted. Thankfully steroids and inhalation therapy kicked in eventually and doc let me go on the promise I would return if any change for the worse. There way too long and then home...tight as a tick, weak as a kitten, torked way too tight...ha ha No way I wanted to be put on a respiratory wing with all the Swine flu people...that place could kill me! Anyway long story short, asthma attack out of the blue. Scared my cousins and my poor husband Charlie was chasing his tail trying to manage 300 plus people, 120 cars, and gathering money and worrying about me. Thank goodness for cell phones, because Vye was able to keep him up minute by minute. so crazy...Should have had a video of her driving. She asked a cop who was sitting in the middle of the road for escort but he couldn't leave because he was directing a funeral so I motioned for Vye to go on and she did, leaving him in the dust. She almost hit a van and left the red lights red. The cops haven't come after her yet....we are still waiting. Directing a funeral is what I wrote...that person was already dead. The cop offered to call a medic, just what two frantic women need, more traffic congestion, you see to get to the hospital you have to go by the mall. A funeral, mall traffic and an ambulance trying to navigate through all that? Too much so I motioned for her to take a right and we went the back way.

Much better now, heart rate slower, coughing and wheezing minimal. Kind of buzzing from all the abuterol. At dinner tonight, my family was discussing the other sudden attacks and the culprits, leaf mold, old water bed, cats, horse, salad dressing, oven cleaner, orange cleaner and orange turpentine, yellow tomatoes, bug spray..etc. a long list in my lifetime, funny in a way how it happens and I have no control to stop or avoid it when it starts.

Not too long ago I got a predisone tablet stuck in my mouth, now that is some nasty tasting stuff. I felt like I was 6 years old again because when I was small I couldn't swallow anything without chewing so I had to chew those nasty things.

Rambling but that is typical for someone on heavy steroids, so I will let you see the quilts for the challenge. Yes I have a clothes line, my little effort towards green. I do use it to dry about 50% of our laundry.

The next image is a close up.

I made the blue one and it now belongs to Sharon in Atlanta who claimed it. It is called the doodle quilt becasue it is quilted with doodles and messages in varigated thread which can cause the eyes to go gaa gaa.
The other one is called sunflowers and is embellished with applique. Vye made it with scraps left from another challenge we entered that we didn't win. The sunflower fabric came from France long ago by her father-in-law who just recently passed away. Most of the fabric for my blue one was pulled from my stash and some of that came from someone else who is deceased. A quilter whose stash was advertised and Vye and I bought it. That is another story for another day. Vye and I have had some adventures in the past 35 years. Hopefully if we are picked for our efforts in the competition, we can get you out there in cyberspace to vote for us? A promise to all who vote for us, I will write about at least one adventure with Vye.

Rants for early November

Day to day distractions are many and plucking my last nerve. Too many projects. My productivity here on earth stinks. Still working on the Adam and Eve thing, have it backed up to the wall so I don't have to look at it. Going to do some mundane work and let it set. Went flea hunting today and found some great junk including some wonderful sheers and silk. Interesting the people out there sifting though other people's junk.

What do you think of a series of fiber art pieces depicting voodoo dolls? Everyone has someone they want to stick a pin into don't they? Would they sell? Heck I know I could give them away. Never had a problem giving stuff away. Never had a problem selling stuff either but I sure do enjoy giveing stuff away. Would love to be thilthy rich and make people happy..although if I was that rich I might be so miserable I would hourd all my money and not give away a dime. Easy to give away what itfs.

Will the Democrats destroy our system of money...I imagine they are thinking of some way to implant a chip into our forearms, allowing us our monthly rations.

What is going on with this weather? I hate cold weather, my nose turns red when I get cold. Can't wear socks becasue of my injured big toe. Stumped it months ago and the nail is black, I suppose I will lose it but not soon enough to keep my feet from getting frost bit. The only shoes that are comfortable are a pair of red crocs, the hole kind. Is the fact that our toe nails grow slower than our finger nails one of God's curiosities? Why do you think there is a decrepancy in the growth rate?

Quilt update: Finished the quarterly challenge and Sharon will be pleased. the quilting is doodles and hidden messages. Quilting and sleeping was all that was required. Nice development though, my cousin Nancy decided she would try quilting so she picked out fabrics from my stash and cut squares and wallah. She is preparing her quilt top. she has never sewn so a little apprehensive but doing a wonderful job. I will post her quilt when she gets a little further.

I worked on an art piece until I ran out of thread and then I switched to the challenge quilt. It is ready to go on the long arm. Sharon claimed it and requested I hide messages in it the way I hide messages in the things I make for family so I think I will have a good time quilting it.

Vye came over Sunday afternoon and we cut fabric out for Christmas quilts...whew! We went through a lot of yardage...miracle if we get it all together before 12/25/09. She will be here tonight and we will go at it again on the challenge quilts.

....and the Quilt goes to?

The quilt as it is has been claimed and I am thrilled that it is going to a wonderful couple. Oh the finer points of quilt creation, design and execution. The best part for me is the quilting. Using a long arm is delightful, smooth as drawing with a pencil. Before the long arm I had to wrestle three layers at snail pace and push through the machine. Somewhat like trying to push an allegator through a 9 inch hole while holding his head and tail. Now it is much easier to load the 3 quilt layers and slide the machine along sewing even stitches. It is much easier to see where you have been and where you are going. Hardly any concern about wrinkles like it is when doing free motion on a sewing machine. Takes some practice to get the hang of it and I am sure a year from now I will be better at it but until then the quilts I do will be full of experimentations and fun motifs. Drop by anytime and see what's doing. Hope my friend in GA who claimed the quilt can come stay awhile and play with me.

Only one to claim the Quilt?

Timing is everything and it must be true because in my last blog I offered up a quilt to the first one to claim it and no one did until today. The timing is way off because now I will be doing two quilts. *CHUCKLE*

This quilt is for the last quarterly challenge for a 2009 quarterly challenge project that Vie and I started in January. We are certainly glad this is the last because we have not made the final ten in any of the challenges. I am convinced it is fixed. Our projects have been designed and executed with skill and creativity and on target with instructions. Not only that but they were as good and in most cases better than the ones chosen. So what is wrong with my timing? Well the deadline is approaching for the submission so Vie and I got together last night and cut and assembled our quilt tops for the challenge. I decided since no one had claimed my offer I would use the opportunity to make the quilt for a certain someone for Christmas...sort of kill two birds with one quilt. Now today a sweet precious girlfriend has laid claim to the quilt and rightly so since she is the first one. The problem is that, it is definitely a man's quilt. My friend, Barbara was in here this morning and she commented that the quilt top “sure was masculine, who is it for”.

Timing is everything for sure. If that sweet friend reads this again, I will take her claim serious but she needs to tell me what her favorite colors are and then next Tuesday night Vie and I will repeat our process and make at least one more top that is definitely more feminine. We were thinking about doing some Christmas themed ones any way.

Check out the picture below of my granddaughter Josie sewing on her new ¾ White. So intent and focused.

Saturday, Rain and Inspiration or Lack of...

Saturday, Sweats, Rain, Maggie and Charlie on the sofa and me surfing the internet. Too consumed with nothingness that I microwaved instant mac and cheese for our lunch. The mac and cheese is the little tubs that kids like. Not the best mac and cheese but edible if you add a half ripe tomato and lots of salt. So why does a woman who likes to cook settle for little tubs of mac and cheese? No answer to that one but I will confess Charlie made a nasty face but he ate it anyway. It is gone now and won't buy anymore until my grand daughters return for another visit.

Still working on the Adam and Eve piece or should I say still procastinating working on the piece. I have a round robin that is entertaining me...this month's robin is adding flying geese, I hate flying geese but I found a one stitch way to make them on "The Quilt Show.com website. Patience and self control is definitely learned traits and I believe I was absent when they were being taught. Went to a workshop taught by Judy Loope a textile artist from Salem VA and was so pleased to be there. Most work shops for me are generally a good idea until I have been there for a half hour and then I am bored. My buddy Vye, says that is when I start acting up. Not sure what she means by acting up but I do get antsy and find distractions...usually going my own way and finding ways to entertain myself.

Judy's workshop was primarily based on building abstract art quilts using sheers, and synthetic fibers that could be melted by a soldering iron.

See my example that I finished and call "Violet's Hedronilly".

Recently, I decorated a bra for the MAMM organization and now it is being shown with some other bra creations at the Daura Gallery in Lynchburg VA. There seems to be alot of interest in these bras and the attention they draw and hopefully the donations toward diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. See "Mammogetasaurus" a rather goofy green dinosaurus that is clutching her girls.

Trying to keep busy. Going to load the Adam and Eve piece on Alma (longarm) to do thread painting this afternoon. After I do that I am going to paint or highlight with paintstik.

Vye and I have to do the last quarterly challenge for All People Quilt website. I think it is rigged. But this is the last challenge for 2009 and we started in Jan and have submitted something each quarter. Nothing has been chosen yet. Fixed is the reason..Yes I love spoiled grapes!!!! And I cry over spilled milk too!!!! The last challenge is a quilt made with 9.5" squares into a 67" lap quilt, sounds like a Christmas present for someone...if you name it your claim it. I believe there is a role for us all
in supporting our service men and women. We may not personally believe in
war, or fighting someone else's battles but we have to believe in our blood.
Without the valor that is required of our armed forces, we would not and
could not enjoy the freedoms we so cherish. It is that valor that I am
committing myself to. So gathering quilters and sewers and pockets to create
well wishing red, white and blue quilts to be given to someone who has been
injured seems a very small price on my part. Members of my guild are going
to help me get started.
